Using iMovie trailers across the curriculum

iMovie - The Video Editing App!

There are plenty of video editing apps but none can compare to the child friendly layout of iMovie. The app itself is perfect for the classroom, children learn quickly how to navigate around and use the app confidently.

I often do keepsakes for school trips, leaver's yearbooks and in the past have used Microsoft Movie Maker - I will however definitely be experimenting using iMovie in the future due to the straightforward and easy to use layout!

Possible the best feature for the use in classrooms is the in built trailers! The app allows you to create 12 different Hollywood style trailers all with different styles. You can customise film studio logos, cast names and credits , add and adjust videos and photos and add existing content from your library, or record new footage straight into your trailer.

Both storytelling techniques and persuasion can easily be covered using this app. Trailers for reading books, class stories or even using the trailers as planning for a written story. It really can be used to get the creative juices going within Literacy. I have also stumbled across some trailer planning sheets for each type - Click Here or Click here, meaning the literacy focus could be making a trailer rather than the trailer assisting another type of text. I have used the iMovie trailers as an introduction to a superhero writing topic. The children made trailers that were to generate ideas and engage them to write with more focus and enthusiasm. Here were their efforts:

But the iMovie trailers are not just for use in Literacy - When a class were making their own iPad games in ICT they used trailers to help advertise their game:

With a Year 2 class we used iMovie trailers to make a tour of our school, this was the beginning of their topic of Location, Location, Location. A geography focused series of lessons that helped the children with their understanding of their surroundings in relation to the world. We started with the location of the school to local area to country to the world. Here were the School Tours:

Other ways to use it would be:

  • To do an information video about a science topic or history topic.
  • Use a trailer to make a biography about a famous person.
  • Make a set of instructions about a PE game,
  • A recount of a school trip or residential.
  • An evaluation of a D&T topic.

Overall, this is an essential app with so many uses across the curriculum. It is a necessity for successful use of the iPad within the classroom.
